Notes in perfume

Does any one know about the perfume notes?

They are not the musical notes we know. They are notes which are a part of the perfumes creation. Sounds interesting right ??

My today review is not particularly an ingredient but a process or layers in which ingredients are adjusted. The creation of these notes are done with the evaporation process of ingredients.

The notes consist of three layers: Top notes, Middle notes, Base notes.

Top Notes

Top note is the first layer of the perfume, they are the first impression of the perfumes when you spray. This layer evaporates quickly on skin and stays upto 5-10 minutes. This layer is important because it helps in selling the product. Normally people analyse the perfume at this stage. The smell on this stage can be either sharp, fresh etc.

  • Lemon
  • Lime
  • Orange
  • Tea Tree
  • Spearmint
  • Peppermint
  • Thyme
  • Grapefruit
  • Cinnamon

Middle Notes

Right after the top notes evaporates the middle notes comes up.This note is also known as ‘heart notes’ which means it is the main body of the perfume. The most fragrance reside in this layer of the perfume. This layer takes time to develop or blend into yours skin, it takes generally 10-30 minutes. The smell on this stage can be warm, soft etc.

  • Lavender
  • Marjoram
  • Roman Chamomile
  • Cinnamon
  • Clary Sage
  • Cypress
  • Palo Santo
  • Myrtle
  • Juniper
  • Pine
  • Rosemarry

Base Notes

When middle notes starts disappearing then this layer comes up.The  main idea of this note is to hold the top and middle notes,in other words lasting power of the perfume reside in this note. This note slows down the evaporation process that keeps the perfume last longer.

The ingredient oils which are used in the layers vary in the prices. the top notes oil are not expensive where as the middle and base notes, that is why perfumes are expensive.

  • Sandalwood
  • Patchouli
  • Myrrh
  • Frankincense
  • Rose
  • Clary Sage
  • Cedarwood
  • Spikenard
  • Jasmine
  • Vetiver
  • Vanilla

All the notes are important but the key layers are the middle and base notes. The best way of purchasing a perfume is to test it and wait for a day to understand the nature of the perfume.

Hope you guys find this article helpful 🙂
